MINISTRY OF EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY AFFAIRS FROM THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA APPLAUDS LVBC’S ROLE IN PROJECTS IMPLEMENTATIONS

The Permanent secretary in the Ministry of East African Community Affairs in the Republic of Uganda Hon Edith Mwanje has applauded Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) on the implementation of projects and programmes within the Lake Victoria Basin. 

Hon Mwanje pledged to mobilize other Partner States in coordinating the mobilization of resources required by the commission.

Hon Mwanje made the remarks during a consultative meeting between the Ministry of East African Community Affairs Uganda and the management of Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) to discuss progress of implementation of projects and programmes at the commission’s headquarters in Kisumu.

The Permanent Secretary cited the importance of the visit to LVBC which is among the nine institutions of the East African Community (EAC).  

The PS said, “I am happy for the progress made so far and I want to encourage the team to keep on executing individual roles with professionalism to ensure that the Commission effectively contributes to the EAC integration agenda”. 

Lake Victoria Basin Commission’s Executive Secretary Dr Masinde Bwire thanked the Permanent Secretary for her steadfast support to the management of the institution. 

Dr Bwire said, “as a commission we appreciate your support in ensuring that we deliver our mandate that benefits the millions of people living within the East African Community”.

During the visit, the Project Development Officer Eng. Hilda Luoga, presented an overview of the progress made by the Commission on implementation of its Projects and Programmes. 

The presentation also highlighted the mandate of the Commission having fourteen areas of intervention and pointed out the achievements, progress, and challenges. 

The commission is currently implementing various projects which include the Integrated Water Resource Management Programme (IWRMP), Multinational Lake Victoria Maritime Communications and Transport (MLVMCT) Project, Scaling out Resilient Water and Agricultural systems (ScaleWays), Adapting to Climate Change in Lake Victoria Basin (ACC-LVB), and Nile Cooperation for Climate Resilience (NCCR) Project.  

The Adapting to Climate Change in Lake Victoria Basin (ACC-LVB) was implemented in Masaka and Mubende districts in the Republic of Uganda. 

An Ultra-Modern Maritime Training facility at the Fisheries Training Institute has also been built in Entebbe at a cost of USD 1.45 Million through the support of the African Development Bank. 

The Permanent Secretary also announced that 1st Deputy Prime Minister from the Republic of Uganda Hon Rebecca Kadaga is expected to visit the commission’s headquarters for a consultative meeting on the progress of projects and programmes.
