Introduction
EAC Partner States through the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) plan to hold a research/scientific conference that will be held in Mwanza, Tanzania on the 15th – 16th February, 2017. The overall objective of the conference will be to inform programming, policy development and partnerships within the Lake Victoria basin.Background
The LVBC is an institution of the EAC established under the protocol for sustainable development of the LVB. The EAC Partner States and LVBC received funding from the World Bank to implement the Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project Phase II (LVEMP II). The project has been implementing activities in the Lake Victoria Basin for over six years now, and has generated a lot of information that could be used to inform the sustainable development agenda of the Basin. Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) is also the focus of attention both at national, regional and international level with several stakeholders including universities and research institutions, public and private, undertaking programs, projects, studies and other initiatives geared towards sustainable development of the Lake Victoria Basin. This has resulted to a wealth of information being held by institutions and individuals in and out of the LVB. As LVEMP II moves towards preparation of the next phase, and Partner States require LVBC to develop programs to cover its areas of cooperation, there is need to gather sufficient data, information and knowledge to inform the direction the activities of this phase will take. The conference will bring together institutions and individuals who have useful information to share. The theme of the conference is “Harnessing Science and Research for Improved collaborative management of Transboundary resources: Case for the LVB”.
