Submitted by on 4 August 2023

Lake Victoria Basin Commission Executive Secretary Dr. Masinde Bwire has sent a message of condolence to the Government of United Republic of Tanzania and bereaved families of the boat tragedy in Lake Victoria.

Fourteen people died after their two boats capsized in Bunda District, Mara Region in the United Republic of Tanzania on Sunday 30th July 2023

Among the casualties were primary school pupils. Fourteen other passengers were rescued alive.

The Executive Secretary said the Commission condoles with the people and the Government of United Republic of Tanzania for this tragic accident.

Dr Bwire said “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the bereaved family members in this time of deep sorrow, and we wish quick recovery to those who sustained injuries in the accident. We further wish to thank the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania for the swift and dedicated action it took after the accident which saved many lives that would have otherwise been lost.”

The Executive Secretary said as coordinating entity for Partner States, LVBC is committed to continue contributing towards making Lake Victoria Search and Rescue (SAR) services effectively, and on time through pragmatic initiatives.

He said currently, the Commission is coordinating the Multinational Lake Victoria Maritime Communications and Transport (MLVMCT) project aimed at improving safety and security in the Lake, including SAR services in the event of marine accidents occurring in the waters of Lake Victoria.

Upon completion in December 2024, the MLVMCT project will provide Lake Victoria with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centers (MRCCs) supported by SAR centers spread along the shoreline and equipped with fast rescue boats and medical facility boats.

He further requested the MLVMCT project implementing Partner States of Republic of Uganda, Republic of Kenya, and United Republic of Tanzania to continue supporting LVBC in the coordination of the project at the regional level.

There are other measures that are being undertaken by the Partner States, EAC Secretariat, and LVBC Secretariat aimed at improving SAR services on Lake Victoria.

These measures include, but not limited to, effective implementation of the Lake Victoria Transport Act 2007, purchase of a fast rescue boat in the financial year 2023/24 and completion of repairs of RV Jumuiya which will be used to support SAR operations and research activities; and finalize the development of aeronautical and maritime SAR plans using the Model EAC harmonized National Aeronautical and Maritime SAR Plan
